Faculty Awards

Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research

Presented annually at the May Faculty/Staff meeting to a faculty member engaged in research. The Award is administered by the Office of University Research with a selection committee composed of representatives from each of the University’s colleges who are members of the Sigma Xi and/or Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.

Stephen J. Klaine, professor of biological sciences and interim director of Clemson’s Institute of Environmental Toxicology, received the 2009 Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research. Klaine’s research focuses on characterizing the effects of human activities on ecosystem health, particularly on aquatic ecosystems. He conducts research that examines the effects pharmaceuticals and nanomaterials can have on fish and they water they live in. Klaine also is researching the ways land development impacts aquatic ecosystems and how it can be minimized

Alumni Award for Distinguished Public Service

Presented annually at the December Faculty/Staff meeting to an extension service professional who has contributed significantly to the economic health and well-being of the citizens of South Carolina. An Extension Service Selection Committee reviews the nominations and recommends the recipient for this award.

Starting in 2002, each recipient receives a $2500 award, along with a wooden plaque. The funds are allocated from the University Foundation through the Alumni Association.
